The success of a product today depends above all on how easy it is to operate and use. Whether the design is right or whether the product evokes the right emotions in the buyer is becoming increasingly important for manufacturers. The UXD degree program trains exactly these highly sought-after specialists. The goal is to use a user-centered approach ("User Centered Design") to make the human-machine interface as optimal as possible for a specific user. The user's ("Users") experience ("Experience") with the product in terms of technology (programming), design and conception (usability) is at the center of attention.

The "User Experience Design" degree program at THI has a unique position among bachelor's degree programs – it is the only program of its kind in Germany. The degree program (standard duration of 7 semesters) was developed to meet changing requirements in product development, usability and marketing – particularly with regard to aspects such as values, emotions and cultural differences.

The term "User Experience" (in German: Anwendererlebnis or Nutzer- bzw. Nutzungserlebnis), in accordance with ISO standard 9241-210, encompasses all aspects of a user's experiences when using a product or interacting with a product, computer program or service. The term has gained significantly in importance, particularly since the spread of the World Wide Web and smartphones (with apps).

The professional profile of a "User Experience Designer" involves making the use of a product (often software, IT systems or websites) as pleasant and easy as possible through a user-centered approach, thereby creating a positive experience for the user. While usability reflects the "pragmatic quality" (effective and efficient completion of tasks), UX focuses on "hedonic quality." This goes beyond pure usefulness, as products can, for example, have a particularly stimulating effect or communicate a specific image through their design.

The UX designer is responsible for visual design as well as information architecture (What information am I looking for? How do I find the information? What is the optimal path through a website?) and information design (how should information be presented appropriately?). The goal is to design "products" that users/consumers find aesthetically pleasing and attractive and that are enjoyable to use.
