In January 2022, the new WordPress version 5.9 was released. The update takes another step towards Full-Site Editing (FSE) with the Gutenberg editor. This means that block-based editing of content is no longer limited to widgets; the entire website can now be customized from the backend. In addition, many adjustments and improvements were made to the block editor itself and to the overall performance of WordPress.
The new update brings numerous innovations that primarily affect the Gutenberg editor and not just the core of WordPress. WordPress 5.9 is the most extensive release of Gutenberg features since the introduction of the Gutenberg editor in WP 5.0. In addition, the new version contains many improvements and bug fixes.

The new version introduces a new default theme, namely “Twenty Twenty-Two”. As the first default theme, this theme offers the possibility of Full-Site Editing. It was primarily developed for FSE and aims to use as little CSS as possible. In addition, there are now numerous redesigned and new design tools. In general, however, the changes to the new editor regarding FSE only apply to the new block themes created with this support. Conventional WordPress themes can still be used and are not affected.
Full-Site Editing is the biggest new feature in this WordPress release. Users no longer need to make changes to HTML and CSS files; instead, they can make changes directly in the admin area of the backend. The idea is to make the entire website customizable using the block editor. FSE understands the structure of the website and provides the option to modify various elements such as headers and footers. Previously, the structure and content were clearly separated. These areas are now fully integrated, providing a consistent editing experience and unified tools. As already mentioned, Full-Site Editing is only available with a block theme. In this design, the template is built entirely from blocks, meaning that headers, footers, or sidebars can also be edited, rather than just the content of pages and posts. Classic themes remain available for the time being. This is why FSE can also be completely omitted. At present, however, some necessary and more complex features and tools are still missing. Furthermore, most plugins and extensions do not yet support this new way of customizing websites. However, this is expected to change over time.
