A mockup (presentation model, visual model) is a digital design of an app or website used to turn a customer's requirements or an idea into a customized design. Mockups are used during the early conceptual phase to visualize ideas and concepts as part of web design. The purpose of such a mockup concept is to allow different combinations of elements and different content structures to be designed and modified without a great deal of effort.
Mockups can also provide an overview of how many and which elements should or need to fit into the design, making it easier to plan how much space each element may occupy. With well-developed mockups, it is usually only a small step to a pixel-perfect design, which ultimately serves as a template for programming. Extensive, multi-part mockups can also be used as a basis for prototypes. A prototype simulates the finished website in its entirety and behaves almost identically to the finished website or web application. It is interactive and contains all of the functions. It is the most detailed design and therefore the final stage before the website is published. For this reason, it is also referred to as a high-fidelity design.

Difference between a Wireframe and a Prototype:
A Wireframe is a rough template of a future design. It usually does not contain any colors or photographs and merely provides a basic framework. These sketches are often handwritten.
A Prototype on the other hand, is an already functional design. Usually, all of the website or app's plugins and functions are already working as well. This gives the customer a very realistic view of the technical implementation.
